Micro-blogging is IN and it just might do US IN! Micro-blogging is a form of blogging that allows users to write brief text updates (usually 140 characters) and publish them, either to be viewed by anyone or by a restricted group which can be chosen by the user. These messages can be submitted by a variety of means, including text messaging, instant messaging, email, MP3 or the web. Do you TWEET?
A recent draft by the US Army intelligence report has identified the popular micro-blogging service Twitter, Global Positioning System maps and voice-changing software as potential terrorist tools. The report by the 304th Military Intelligence Battalion, posted on the website of the Federation of American Scientists (FAS), examines a number of mobile and web technologies and their potential uses by militants.
The posting of the report on the FAS site was reported Friday by Wired magazine contributing editor Noah Shachtman on his national security blog “Danger Room” at wired.com. The report is not based on clandestine reporting but drawn from open source intelligence known as OSINT.
A chapter on “Potential for Terrorist Use of Twitter” notes that Twitter members sent out messages, known as “Tweets,” reporting the July Los Angeles earthquake faster than news outlets and activists at the Republican National Convention in Minneapolis used it to provide information on police movements. “Twitter has also become a social activism tool for socialists, human rights groups, communists, vegetarians, anarchists, religious communities, atheists, political enthusiasts, hacktivists and others to communicate with each other and to send messages to broader audiences,” the report said.
But don’t worry, unless John McCain is our next president as he doesn’t even own a computer, and doesn’t email, let alone “tweet”.
“Extremist and terrorist use of Twitter could evolve over time to reflect tactics that are already evolving in use by hacktivists and activists for surveillance,” it said. “This could theoretically be combined with targeting.” The report outlined scenarios in which militants could make use of Twitter, combined with such programs as Google Maps or cell phone pictures or video, to carry out an ambush or detonate explosives.
And we thought modern technology was on our side!

TO TWEET OR NOT TO TWEET – IS TWITTER RIGHT FOR YOU
First it was Instant Messaging, then Blogging and the rise of Social Networks and now the latest craze to hit cyberspace is Twitter – a real-time micromessaging service that allows people to instantly communicate with a group individuals who choose to follow, for any number of reasons, their thoughts or activities.
Twitter is the brainchild of author Jack Dorsey (@Jack), and although it’s only been around in its current form since 2006, Dorsey and co-founders Evan Williams and Biz Stone’s simple application is on target, according to Neislen.com, to be the most-rapidly growing Member Community phenomenons for the foreseeable future.
Drawing from the Short Message Service (SMS) platform, Twitter allows people to post “tweets” – little bursts of text-based content that communicates status updates and, on occasion, “pearls of wisdom” – to a network of followers on the Twitter website, and the subsequently SMS devices and other external applications. Due to size limitations dictated by SMS devices (most basic cell phones were constrained to160 characters before a short message was split) Dorsey choose to limit a tweet to 140 characters leaving 20 characters for the user name. Best of all, Twitter is currently a free service, and all indications are that it will remain that way.
The ubiquitousness of cell phone capable of receiving SMS has fueled Twitter’s remarkable growth.. But a study published on the Harvard Business Publishing website June 1, 2009 presents a fascinating set of conclusions. Examining a random sampling of 300,000 Twitter users, the survey found that a small percentage (10%) account for the majority of tweets (90%). The suggestion here is that Twitter is more of a one-way (or one-to-many) communication network as opposed to a peer-to-peer social network. Also the survey concluded that more men follow tweets posted by other men than tweets posted by women. There is a certain reverse voyeurism implied by this conclusion than can be explained by the fact that Twitter is a text-based application – no photos allowed. The survey also concluded that more women than men have signed up on Twitter.

You can set up Auto-DM (Direct Message) through Tweetlater.com to send DMs to those people who begin to follow you. You could thank people for following you, ask them a question (i.e. “What are you looking for in your business?”), or you could provide them a useful link to your website. You can set auto-DM to everyone, but I highly suggest you do not auto-follow everyone. This can send a red flag to Twitter. Twitter is constantly changing their formulas due to the sheer volume of traffic on there and the high rate of spam. Your purpose should not be to spam, but to make connections. These just open a small window for you.
You could also use TweetLater to set up keyword alerts. Use any keywords pertaining to you or your business and have auto replies sent out to the person that uses that particular keyword when they tweet. You set up the replies beforehand, and TweetLater will tweet those out for you when the time is appropriate! This is a powerful way to find other like-minded people to form relationships with. Keep messages to either a question or quick link. Due to the cap Twitter has put on for the number of tweets per day, keep your keywords to a minimum and to a specified target.
Since you’re only allowed to do 50 tweets per day, you should set a limit on the number of auto-tweets you do. Example: If you know that you currently do about 20 manual tweets per day, then limit your auto-tweets to about 30. If you send too many auto-tweets this could send a red flag to Twitter, and get you “Twitter slapped”. You can do about 1 every 2-3 hours. You can send affiliate links, additional blog posts, or interesting articles you came across during the day. Your main goal is to get your tweets out there all the time because different people login and logoff.
Please take notice. Some people do not like auto-replies and may unfollow you. Don’t take this personally. Keep up your momentum and never forget to tweet yourself. They’re following you because you have something to offer them, so don’t set your Twitter account on auto-pilot 24/7. Contribute and make connections!
